Centraal Grand Café & Tappery

Overview

Walking into Centraal Grand Café & Tappery feels like stepping into a well-worn neighborhood hangout that somehow also pulls off a polished, European café vibe. I’ve stopped by more times than I can count, usually after a long walk through Bay View, and the place always manages to feel lively without being chaotic. Located at 2306 S Kinnickinnic Ave, Milwaukee, WI 53207, United States, it’s one of those spots locals casually recommend because they assume everyone already knows it. Strangely, not everyone does-and that’s a shame.

The menu leans heavily into comfort food with global inspiration, which reflects a broader trend in American dining. According to data from the National Restaurant Association, over 60% of diners prefer familiar dishes with a twist, and that’s exactly what happens here. One visit, I ordered the moules frites, and the next time it was a burger topped with rich cheese and a perfectly toasted bun. Everything tasted intentional, not rushed. The kitchen seems to follow a farm-to-table mindset when possible, sourcing ingredients locally, which aligns with practices supported by organizations like the James Beard Foundation.

What really stands out is how the food pairs with the tap list. This isn’t a place that treats beer as an afterthought. With dozens of taps rotating through Belgian-style ales, local craft brews, and seasonal options, the tappery side of the name earns its keep. I once chatted with a server about the difference between a dubbel and a tripel, and instead of a canned explanation, I got a clear, friendly breakdown that made choosing easy. That kind of knowledge builds trust, especially for diners who don’t want to feel intimidated by a long drink list.

The dining room itself carries an Old World tavern feel-dark wood, cozy booths, and enough natural light to make afternoon meals inviting. On busy nights, the noise level can climb, which is worth noting if you’re after a quiet conversation. Still, that hum is part of the charm. It signals a place people actually enjoy being in, not just passing through.

Reviews around Milwaukee often highlight consistency, and that matches my experience. Whether it’s brunch or dinner, the quality rarely dips. One friend who works in hospitality pointed out that consistency is one of the hardest things for restaurants to maintain, especially independent ones. The fact that Centraal manages it speaks to solid systems in the kitchen and attentive management on the floor. Even when the place is packed, orders come out accurately, and servers check in without hovering.

There are limitations, of course. The menu isn’t designed for extreme dietary restrictions, though vegetarian options are clearly marked. If you’re looking for an ultra-quiet fine dining experience, this may not be your go-to. But if you want honest food, a thoughtful beer selection, and a room full of people actually enjoying themselves, it hits the mark.

Over the years, Milwaukee’s dining scene has grown more competitive, with new locations opening regularly. Yet this café and tappery continues to hold its ground, not by chasing trends, but by refining what it already does well. From casual lunches to celebratory dinners, it fits neatly into everyday life, which is probably why so many locals treat it like an extension of their own living room.

We had our wedding reception at Centraal Cafe and would highly recommend it to anyone considering! We were in the courtyard area in October so it was covered and heated and the vibes were magical. We got so many compliments from our guests on the food and the service, everyone was taken care of and our servers checked on us constantly. We worked with Molly, the events coordinator, throughout our planning and she was awesome. Quick to respond to any questions, clear in communication, and very helpful in providing us suggestions. We had a great experience and would highly recommend!

Centraal Grand Café and Tappery – Milwaukee, WI We stopped in for an early breakfast and were pleasantly surprised by how much we loved this spot. The Tomatoes and Mushrooms Omelet was absolutely amazing—fluffy, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. The real standout, though, was the Crispy Avocado Eggs Benedict—crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside, and topped with perfectly poached eggs. So good! The vibe was cozy and inviting, with a touch of European charm, and the staff made us feel welcome from the moment we walked in. Whether you're just grabbing a casual breakfast or meeting friends for brunch, Centraal is definitely worth a visit. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This place has been on my list for a while so I was excited to try it for dinner. First of all I love the atmosphere inside, it's very open and has a pretty interior design with a large open bar. They have a large dink menu including a wide selection of beers and cocktails. I had the chili salmon cucumber bowl which was so good I would order it again. The flavor was incredible and the salmon was cooked perfectly. They also have kids menus available for the little ones. I would have loved to check out their patio but it was way too hot when we went, so I'll guess I'll have to go back to check out their patio and brunch!

I love the atmosphere of this restaurant, and it is surprisingly large. I was pleasantly surprised not to have to wait for a table during prime brunch time on a Saturday because it looked so busy. The fried chicken sandwich had good flavor but wasn't super crispy. I really enjoyed the ahi tuna nachos appetizer, but the wonton chips were definitely a tad over-salted. I loved that there was kombucha on tap, perfect for brunch! I also liked that they have such an extensive beer menu. Overall would definitely go back!

Very nice place with a good menu. Nice brunch or lunch options. I love corned beef hash and fruit anytime it is on the menu. They didn't have it but had a pulled beef hash with peppers and onion topped with eggs and it was very good with a nice kick. I will return when I am in town. Everyone else enjoyed their food too

Enjoyed an amazing Easter brunch in the beautiful courtyard. Food outstanding. Atmosphere cozy and comfortable. Service top notch. Highly recommend stopping here for a drink or meal. Everyone’s food was fantastic! Loved my greens and grains scramble. Rose mimosas… yes! Boozy coffees were the after brunch drink I never knew I needed. Appetizer donuts slightly overcooked but still delicious.

This was my first time at Centraal and I had an amazing experience! The restaurant is cozy and our server Ty was one of the best servers I have had. She was kind, gave us good suggestions for food and drinks, and was open to having a conversation with us. We will definitely be back!

We stopped in for lunch, and the service was fast, and the food was on the spot; as for the beer selection, well, if you have a hard time choosing something, you will be here awhile since their beer menu is rather extensive but sometimes just randomly picking something might be magic in a bottle, either way, it’s a fun place to gather with friends
